After the silent dissolution of Alexandria, we turn to the heart of the East, nestled among forests and rivers: Nalanda.
Nalanda was not merely a library; it was one of the world’s first great residential universities. Starting from the 5th century AD, thousands of scholars, students, and teachers from China, Tibet, Korea, and Central Asia converged here. Philosophy, medicine, astronomy, logic, and Buddhist teachings echoed within these walls. Here, knowledge was not a hidden secret; it flowed like a living river that grew as it was shared.
At the heart of this massive complex stood the nine-story library buildings known as “Ratnodadhi” (Sea of Jewels). Housing rare manuscripts, logical treatises, and medical texts on their top floors, these libraries were the repositories where humanity’s accumulated knowledge was sealed. Books were written not on papyrus, but meticulously inscribed on leaves and parchment. Every single line was an act of resistance against the erosion of time.
Yet, the end of Nalanda was not a slow neglect like Alexandria’s; it was a ruthless destruction wrought by human hands and arrogance.
In the late 12th century, when the armies commanded by General Bakhtiyar Khilji invaded the region, their goal was not merely to conquer territories, but to erase the memory of this land. They set fire to Nalanda’s massive library. According to historical records, the vast manuscript collection within the library was so immense that the flames and smoke continued to smolder for days, even weeks. Millions of books, philosophical treatises, medical prescriptions, and texts holding the secrets of the universe burned into ashes for days.
Alexandria drowned in the sea; Nalanda was consumed in the fire of ignorance.
Today, as you wander among its ruins, the sound whispered by the wind through those ancient bricks repeats the very same question: Why does humanity seek to destroy the memory it creates with its own hands? Books turn to ash, stones break; all that remains is that great silence.
