The myth of Icarus, immortalized in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, is generally recounted as Icarus rising into the sky through his own hubris and crashing into the sea for exceeding his bounds. Yet this myth is, today, the naked and most ruthless anatomy of people's boundless ambition, their insatiable desire for "more," and the hubris of their own success.
Let us remember the story: The master architect Daedalus has been imprisoned in the Labyrinth along with his son by King Minos of Crete. There is only one way to escape: the sky. Daedalus achieves the impossible for humankind by binding bird feathers together with beeswax, crafting two pairs of wings. When the moment of escape arrives, he issues his famous warning to his son: "Icarus, my son, I advise you to fly a middle course. If you fly too low, the sea spray will weigh down your wings; if you fly too high, the heat of the sun will melt the wax."
Icarus takes flight under his father's guidance. At first, all goes well. However, the dizzying freedom of the sky, along with the intoxication of speed and power, takes hold of him. While the people on the earth below look like mere ants to him, he begins to consider himself a god. Driven by the desire for "Higher, brighter, more limitless!" he forgets his father's counsel of the "middle path." He draws closer to the sun. And the inevitable end: the heat of the sun melts the wax bound by his ambition. The feathers scatter one by one, and Icarus plummets from the void created by his own hubris into the cold waters of the Aegean Sea, perishing.
In today's world, each of us is an Icarus. And the system we live in is a Labyrinth that constantly whispers to us: "Target the sky," "Push your limits," "Reach the peak." Success stories on social media, entrepreneurial tales, and pressures to "earn more" or "become more famous" are our wax wings. We are shown not the middle path, but the brightest sun.
As we rapidly climb the career ladder, constantly chasing more likes, more power, and more validation, we fail to realize that we are actually drawing closer to the sun. When we are consumed by that fire of ambition, we disregard our families, our friends, and even our own mental health. We believe we have achieved the impossible until, at that final step, our wings melt and reality strikes us hard.
The tale of Icarus reminds us of the truth: "Higher" is not always better; it is usually simply more dangerous. The intoxication of success, boundarylessness, and hubris detach human beings from their essence, dragging them toward an unknown of their own making.
To live by the "middle path," balance, and moderation is far safer and more peaceful than ambition.
