In 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 and 2 probes on the longest journey in history toward the outer reaches of the Solar System. Thinking that these vehicles might one day become the only physical evidence left of humanity, a special time capsule telling the story of human kind was placed aboard: gold plated copper gramophone records. Today, these records are known as "humanity's common language and message of peace," but behind the scenes while their contents were being determined, a fierce bureaucratic and political battle took place.
A committee led by astronomer Carl Sagan was formed to prepare the project. The team tried to fit everything related to the Earth and humanity into this limited space. Ocean waves, wind, thunder, birdsong, a dog's bark, and a baby's cries were added to the record, along with music from various cultures around the world. However, as the content grew, troubles began. When politicians and bureaucrats interfered with the project, things started to unravel.
A map showing Earth's location in the galaxy was placed on the records for any advanced civilizations that might find the spacecraft billions of years in the future. This map was a coordinate system based on radio waves emitted by surrounding pulsar stars. Some security- and defense-oriented bureaucrats of the era opposed this idea. Trying to prevent the coordinates from being included, they argued, "We are openly decoding the map of the universe into space; what if a malicious civilization finds us?" Carl Sagan and his committee stood behind science and curiosity, managing to get the map included, but the debate took place behind closed doors for days.
At the same time, the committee wanted to include some basic anatomical drawings of the human body on the record to explain human biology. This was where 1970s American social morals and official institutions stepped in. Human anatomy, reproductive cells, and sexuality were deemed risky, embarrassing, or obscene. Even the simplest depiction of the human body was caught in censorship mechanisms; some visuals were completely removed from the record or reduced to their most harmless forms.
Voyager 1 and 2 are now drifting silently through interstellar space, carrying the gold record with humanity's music, nature, and sounds.
