Writing and Alchemy Series #3# The Secret Alphabet of Trees: Ogham and the Magical Whisper of Celtic Forests
The Ogham alphabet is one of the most enigmatic writing systems in the Celtic world. Based on linguistic and archaeological analyses of inscriptions, it is accepted that the system emerged to record the Early Irish language no later than the 4th century AD (and according to some researchers, as early as the 1st century AD). Rather than relying on a written culture, the Celts trusted oral tradition and memory, preferring to carve this alphabet onto standing stones, boundary markers, or wooden logs.
Its emergence was driven by far more than a mere commercial need for record-keeping. Ogham was born with a hidden, esoteric, and protective purpose that transcended mere functionality. It was used by the Druids, who held religious and legal authority in Celtic society. What makes it most fascinating compared to other alphabets is its method of writing: rather than being inked onto paper, it was worked into stone and wood as horizontal or angled notches placed above or below a vertical or horizontal central line (droim). They forged a secret language that ordinary people could not read one that anyone looking from the outside would see merely as random notches on wood or lines on stone.
Moreover, the letters of this system speak directly to nature, or more precisely, to the spirit of trees. Every letter in Ogham bears the name of a tree and is known by the name of the plant it symbolizes; for instance, Beith represents the birch tree, and Ailim represents the pine. When selecting these letters, the Druids consciously matched the energies of trees in nature with the essence of the characters. This secret alphabet was developed to protect the sacred, communicate with the spirits of other realms and trees, cast divinations, and determine property boundaries by carving the names of the deceased onto memorial stones.
Today, there are still those who know and use Ogham. Linguists, academics, and enthusiasts of Celtic history can read and write this system. Beyond that, among modern paganism, Wicca traditions, and groups interested in Celtic mythology, Ogham is actively used as a tool for divination and meditation, much like runes or tarot.
Ogham is a living history that, thousands of years ago in the misty lands of Ireland, turned the voice of the trees into sound and letter, and today still preserves its esoteric mystery.
