The human mind loves filling in the mysterious gaps of history and finding miracles that defy the rules of nature. The seductive darkness of the unknown is sometimes enough to take an ordinary object and cast it in the starring role of a millions of years old fantastic legend. The famous event that took place in the Coso Mountains of California in 1961 is precisely the story of such a mental illusion.
It all started when three curiosity seekers looking for geodes cut open a hard rock they found. Finding a modern spark plug instead of a crystal at the center of the stone was practically a lottery win for alternative history enthusiasts and "lost civilization" proponents. After all, it was claimed that the stone had formed among hundreds of thousands of years of geological layers; meaning motor vehicles or unknown advanced technologies must have existed millions of years ago!
Yet, when the veil of reality was pulled back, it became clear that there was no cosmic secret that would alter the course of history, but rather an ironic and flawless practical joke by nature. The piece emerging from inside was a standard car spark plug dating back to the 1920s. So, how did that modern metal piece end up inside that hard rock?
The answer lay not in mind-bending mysteries, but in the cold and clear laws of geology: Concretion. Under the right chemical conditions and with rusting metal, within a span that can be considered a short few decades, surrounding minerals can be magnetically drawn to form a shell as hard as concrete. Nature had swallowed a modern piece of human-made waste, dressed it in a millions of years old armor, and created a puzzle that would blow human minds.
Just like the Dashka Stone, the Coso Artifact shows us not the fragility of history, but the human mind's passion for mystery and how skillfully nature can play tricks on us.
