Located in Mexico's Mapimi Desert, the Mapimi Silence Zone is much like the Bermuda Triangle of the world. The moment you step foot here, radio waves suddenly cut out, compasses go haywire, and they refuse to show direction. Even though scientific explanations relate the severe bending of signals in the air to the region's past exposure to meteorite showers and high magnetic iron minerals deep underground, one feels completely disconnected from the outside world here. Nature sinks into such a deep silence that it seems to swallow even its own voice.
What Makes This Place So Bizarre?
The Death of Radio Waves and Satellites: AM/FM radio frequencies and cell phone signals suddenly drop to zero in the area. Even satellites experience strange interruptions in data transmission when passing over this region.
The Accidentally Crashed US Missile: In 1970, an Athena test missile launched by the US military from Utah veered off course and crashed directly into this silence zone. When search and rescue teams went to find the wreckage, they experienced a nightmare due to the complete loss of radio signals, taking days to reach the missile's remains.
Giant and Mutated Flora: Cacti and certain shrub species in the region grow much larger, take on purplish hues, and develop unusual forms compared to their counterparts elsewhere in the world. This is thought to stem from residual radiation or the magnetic field's effect on plant DNA.
The world sometimes likes to remind us that rules aren't all that strict, hiding little "error codes" in secret corners.
(This post is the first installment of our series examining the world's anomalies that defy the laws of physics.)
