As one of the most important religious and political centers of the Lycian League, the Ancient City of Letoon is like a time tunnel. According to a story told by the poet Ovid, the city was founded in the name of Leto, who became pregnant by Zeus. The earliest settlement traces in the city date back to the 7th century BC. It served as the common sanctuary of the Lycian Federation.
The heart of Letoon houses three important temple ruins rising side by side. Located on the far west, the temple dedicated to the mother goddess Leto was built in the Ionic order, while the middle structure was erected in honor of Zeus and his son Apollo, the twins' father, and the easternmost temple was dedicated to the hunter goddess Artemis. In ancient times, the sacred water sources surrounding these temples have transformed into today's reed and marsh landscape. The fragments of columns reflecting off the water's surface deepen the mystical atmosphere of the valley even further.
The city also hosted a discovery of revolutionary significance for the world of archaeology. Found here and written in three languages Greek, the Lycian language, and Aramaic the famous Letoon Trilingual Inscription played the exact same critical role as the Rosetta Stone in deciphering the lost Lycian language. This stone demonstrates that the city was not merely a center of faith, but also an international diplomacy hub where different civilizations and cultures intersected.
Today, Letoon, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, features an ancient theater, early Christian basilica ruins, and mosaics. This sacred space, nurtured in Leto's hands, remains one of the most captivating stops in Lycia, carrying the traces of the past into the present.
