Bookless Libraries – Unread Texts – Unspoken Words #1

The First Library of Humanity: Memory The first library of humanity had no walls. No shelves, no books, no doors. And yet, thousands of years of knowledge were stored somewhere: in the human mind. Imagine a world without writing. No books, archives, paper or libraries. And yet, people knew when the seasons changed, which plants were edible, which animals were dangerous and where to find water. They told stories of births, deaths, migrations and wars. They taught their children how to hunt, make fire and cultivate the land. Where was all this knowledge kept? For much of human history, the answer was somewhere quite different from the places we are familiar with today: in memory. Long before writing emerged, people had developed ways of passing their experiences and knowledge on to others. How to track an animal, which plants grew in a particular season, where a path led, or what had happened in the history of a community were not things learned through individual experience alone. Knowl...

Reading Nature #1: Lost Ways of Knowing

Can a bird’s song announce that fruits are ripening? Can the blossoming of a flower signal the gathering time of another plant? For the Indigenous peoples of North America, these signs in nature carried vital knowledge that determined the calendar of life. When Indigenous communities living along the Pacific coast heard a particular bird's call, they weren't just welcoming the arrival of spring; that sound was also the herald of wild berries beginning to ripen in the forest. Similarly, the blooming of a specific tree could indicate that the time had come to gather plant materials for basketry. To some, these might sound like charming folklore about nature. Yet behind them lay long years of observation, a deep skill in recognizing the life cycles of species, and an understanding of their interrelationships. Today, we tend to view many things we encounter in nature as isolated events: A bird sings, a tree blossoms, a river rises... Yet all of these are parts of the same ecologic...

Writing and Alchemy Series (12): A Path with No Exit or a Return to the Self? The Ancient Symbolism of the Labyrinth

In alchemy, transformation is not simply a matter of one substance turning into another. In alchemical texts, material processes, ideas about nature, and reflections on human existence often overlap. The images found in these texts do more than describe laboratory procedures; they also invite different interpretations. The labyrinth is one such symbol worth exploring. When we think of a labyrinth, we usually imagine a place where finding the way out is difficult. Yet, when read through an alchemical lens, the question is not only which path leads to the exit, but also what changes along the way toward the center. The route is not straight. It involves turns, uncertainty, and the possibility of retracing one's steps. What appears at the beginning may look different by the time the journey ends. To consider the symbolic meaning of the labyrinth, we must begin with the idea of the center. The center is not merely a destination; it is the point toward which all the surrounding paths le...

Yazı ve Simya Serisi (12): Çıkışı Olmayan Yol mu, Kendine Dönüş mü? Labirentin Kadim Sembolizmi

Why Do Some Songs Bring Back the Past?

You hear a song again after many years. Within the first few notes, you find yourself somewhere else, in another time. A summer evening, an old friend, a long journey, or a relationship you thought you had left far behind. You have made no particular effort to remember any of it. The song begins, and the memory simply appears. This is what makes the relationship between music and memory so fascinating. When we listen to a melody, we do not merely register sounds. The experiences, places, people, and emotions surrounding that moment can become part of the memory associated with the music. Years later, hearing the same melody can bring memories of that period back to life. Psychologists study this phenomenon under the term music evoked autobiographical memories . Autobiographical memory allows us to recall events, experiences, and emotions from our own lives. Music, in turn, can sometimes act as an unexpected key to those memories. The process does not always require conscious effo...
