In Greek and Roman mythology, the existence of the truffle was directly attributed to the power of the gods. According to legend, Zeus, the king of the gods, struck the base of an oak tree with a lightning bolt he sent down to earth, and this divine energy transformed into a truffle beneath the soil. For people of antiquity, therefore, the truffle was not merely food, but a blessing dropped from the table of the gods down to the earth. Because it was believed to carry the power of fire and lightning, it was regarded with a mystical reverence.
However, when the darkness of the Middle Ages arrived, this divine aura suddenly inverted. Under the pressure of the Church and the superstitions of the era, the truffle was declared the "work of witches" or the "devil's egg." Sprouting suddenly from the ground in the dark, without ever seeing the sunlight, it was deemed suspicious and dangerous by the Church. At one point, peasants wouldn't even walk past it, believing it to be a curse of the witches; for like everything that could not be explained by human will, it was an object of fear.
With the Renaissance, fear gave way once again to awe and passion. In the courts of France and Italy, truffles became the ultimate symbol of power and status. Kings spent fortunes trying to find this black tuber, and hunters kept their best truffle beds secret like family heirlooms. In the court of King Francis I, truffles took center stage as the "banquet jewel of kings," while the alchemists of the era wrote prescriptions claiming it extended human life.
The fact that truffles still cannot be fully cultivated today allows them to preserve their ancient story. No matter how advanced we become, they manage to hide in that corner of nature that lies beyond human control. What lands on our plate is not just a rare mushroom; it is actually a thousand-year old fairy tale stretching from the lightning bolt of Zeus to the witch phobia of the Middle Ages, and from palace feasts to the mystery of the underworld.
