Meaning "Paradise" in the local language, K'gari takes its name from a legend that breathes soul into these lands. According to Butchulla mythology, while the creator god Biyaame was shaping the earth, his helper, a beautiful angel named K'gari, fell in love with this region. K'gari wanted so much to stay among those magnificent beaches, lush forests, and pure freshwater lakes that the god transformed her into this island to let her live forever.
What makes K'gari more than just a beautiful island is not only its legends; its physical reality is virtually a natural miracle.
A Giant Made Entirely of Sand: It is the largest sand island in the world. Its colossal rainforests rise atop sands that have accumulated millimeter by millimeter for tens of thousands of years, without any underlying soil base. This is one of the rare areas where nature accomplishes the impossible.
The Land of Crystal Lakes: Hundreds of freshwater lakes are scattered across the interior of the island (such as Lake MacKenzie). The most enchanting aspect of these lakes is that, although they are not fed by any outside rivers or streams, they are filled entirely with filtered, pure rainwater and possess a glass like clarity thanks to the natural filtration of the sand.
Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, K'gari is under protection due to the fragility of its ecosystem and its unique geological formation.
