Writing and Alchemy Series (10): Tarot and the Fool’s Journey: The Great Transformation of the Human Soul in 22 Steps

Tarot is neither an ordinary fortune-telling deck laid out before us nor a mere tool for reading the future. The 22 cards of the Major Arkana form a striking and universal map of evolution that the human soul traverses, from birth to a cosmic maturity, from ignorance to complete awakening. In the Hermetic tradition and alchemy, this map is called "The Fool’s Journey."

Each card represents a stage of transformation, a threshold, and an archetypal force that the soul undergoes within the alchemical Furnace (Athanor). Exactly for this reason, the "Fool" who sets out with card number 0 is actually all of us, searching for our path within the labyrinth of life.

Number 0: Innocence at the Edge of the Cliff (The Fool)

The journey begins with the Fool, standing at the edge of a cliff with a small bundle on his shoulder, not knowing where he is going yet unafraid to take a step. He is pure potential, untainted by experience yet; he is the symbol of divine ignorance and absolute freedom. He steps toward a precipice with his dog right behind him, because true transformation is only possible by placing this pure trust in the unknown and daring to risk falling.

The Construction of the Material World and Boundaries (1 to 7)

When the Fool sets out, he encounters the rules of the material realm, willpower, and the ego at the very first stations:

  • The Magician (1): The awakening of consciousness, the power to direct life through the Hermetic principle of "as above, so below."

  • The High Priestess (2): The gateway of the subconscious, intuition, and hidden knowledge unseen by the outer eye.

  • The Empress (3) and The Emperor (4): The productive abundance of nature paired with the construction of social order, authority, and concrete structure.

  • The Hierophant (5), The Lovers (6), and The Chariot (7): The teachings of tradition, choices made between the dilemmas of the heart (love and will), and willpower triumphing over adversity.

Inner Fracture and the Education of the Soul (8 to 14)

As the journey reaches its midpoint, worldly successes are no longer enough; the soul must turn inward, confront its shadow, and find its balance:

  • Justice (8) and The Hermit (9): The period of universal law, karma, and withdrawing from crowds to seek the lantern of one's inner voice.

  • Wheel of Fortune (10) and Strength (11): The cyclical flow of life, ups and downs, and the power to embrace inner drives (anger, fear) with their wild nature and tame them.

  • The Hanged Man (12), Death (13), and Temperance (14): The ability to look at the world upside down, the complete death of the old self to be reborn from its ashes (alchemical Nigredo), and the reconciliation of polar opposites.

The Great Confrontation and Cosmic Awakening (15 to 21)

As the end of the road approaches, humanity confronts its own darkness and mental traps; yet these shocks elevate it to the highest level of consciousness:

  • The Devil (15) and The Tower (16): Material shackles, addictions, and false constructs we wove with our own hands being brought down to rubble by a sudden lightning strike.

  • The Star (17), The Moon (18), and The Sun (19): The healing sun emerging after the storm, the deep waters of the subconscious, and pure enlightenment.

  • Judgement (20) and The World (21): The reckoning of the past, the ultimate call of the soul, and that cosmic wholeness completed by The World card the closing of the circle and oneness with the universe.

Closing the Circle

When the Fool passes through this arduous labyrinth stretching from number 0 to 21, he is no longer the person who set out; he is a wise being ripened by experience, alchemically turned to gold. The 22 gates of Tarot whisper to us that life is not a penal colony, but the art of remembering and rewriting one's own essence.
