Instead of sleeping eight hours at night like a normal person, he tried to stay awake for days on end by taking twenty-minute naps every four hours. He operated in a constant state of sleep deprivation and semi-consciousness. Perhaps his immense intelligence and talent stemmed from this mental fog fueled by chronic sleep deprivation.
This blurriness also brought along a deep-seated paranoia. While it is often said he wrote backwards simply to avoid smudging the ink with his left hand, the reality was much stranger: he completely encrypted his notes so that no one could steal his ideas and drawings. He encrypted them to such an extreme that he sometimes had to look in a mirror just to read his own journals. A genius alienated by his own writing, trusting no one...
The most entertaining and bizarre part of all was his sense of humor. Behind his aloof and antisocial behavior lay a deeply absurd prank culture. He always carried around wind-up mechanical toys. In the town squares, to startle people, he would bring along dragons and fake lizards made by stuffing them with gas and making them fly around.
Although everyone remembers him today as a pioneer engineer, his ideas on paper rarely aligned with reality. Most of the massive war machines, tanks, or flying devices he drew could never have functioned according to the laws of physics. Yet, even though he claimed to despise designing weapons of war, he wrote letters to the wealthiest dukes of his time to make money, saying, “I can build you toxic smoke machines that will tear down fortress walls.” This made him quite the pragmatist.
Forget those boring, textbook life stories. Leonardo is a man lost among ideas wandering through the labyrinths of his mind—unable to sleep, paranoid, and utterly eccentric. Honestly, Leonardo truly deserves to be history’s most entertaining anti-hero.
