The human mind is like a millstone that does not know how to stop and rest. With our unresolved questions, anxieties about tomorrow, and the desire to “be more,” every moment turns into a problem, and every sound becomes a burden. Sometimes, we grow so tired of this weight that we dream of retreating to a dert-free tranquility—a place where we do not analyze, do not seek meaning, and simply “exist,” perhaps much like the silent nature of a horse.
Yet, this escape we call “peace” is actually an illusion.
In his story about reincarnation, David Eagleman portrays the act of escaping the complex, painful state of human consciousness for a “simpler existence” as a kind of reward. One assumes that by escaping the noise in their own mind, their troubles will cease. However, they miss a crucial point: You do not get rid of your troubles; you destroy the “you” who perceives them.
When a being descends to a “simpler” level, it can no longer experience the relief of being free from trouble; because that consciousness, which would recognize that relief and define peace as “peace,” has been decommissioned. In other words, the peace you are looking for is not a place where your troubles end, but a void where the “awareness” that makes those troubles matter has faded away.
This is why peace is a trap.
To be human is to try to make sense of the world despite the noise in one’s mind. The pursuit of peace is, in essence, a desire to “resign” from the arduous test of existence. Yet, true freedom is not found in fleeing to a state of unconsciousness; it is the persistence of extracting meaning from the heavy, noisy burden of being human.
For to experience a peace you cannot remember is the same as never having existed at all. When you flee from your troubles, you lose not the troubles themselves, but the “you” within them. Our test is not to flee from the noise, but to build our own meaning and our own silence within it.
Peace is not a destination; it is the very act of the painful persistence that destroys you when you flee, but makes you “human” when you remain.
